Best Golf Courses in Uruguay
4 ranked courses in Uruguay
Uruguay has four clubs in this guide: one in Montevideo, two near Punta del Este in Maldonado Department and one in the wine country of Colonia. Club de Golf del Uruguay, founded in 1922, plays Alister MacKenzie's 1930 design in the Punta Carretas neighborhood, facing the river close to the city center. Its narrow, tree-lined fairways lead to bunker-guarded greens, the par 73 hosts the Abierto Ciudad de Montevideo late in the year, and the grounds are protected as a historical monument. In Punta del Este, Cantegril Country Club began with a nine-hole course in 1929 and opened its 18 holes in December 1947, a par 71 by the American architect Luther Koontz over undulating ground and groves of trees; Emilio Serra later reworked the greens, and the club championship has run since 1948. Club del Lago Golf, on Laguna del Sauce, is a sand-based complex of three circuits, called A, B and C, whose fairways climb and drop through pine forest past artificial lakes. Enrique Serra designed the original 18 holes, Ángel Reartes worked on the Laguna del Sauce circuit, and the club has staged PGA Tour Latinoamérica events. Carmelo Golf Club, near the town of Carmelo, is Randy Thompson's par 72 from the start of the 2000s, built on low, swampy ground and laid out around lakes and wetland. It is the home venue of PGA Uruguay, and the grounds include a polo field.

About Golf Courses in Uruguay
Uruguay's seasons run opposite to the northern hemisphere's, and spring, from September to November, and autumn, from March to May, are the mildest months for golf. Punta del Este is busiest from December to February, when Club del Lago's tournament calendar is fullest. Club del Lago takes visitors, with electric carts and rental clubs, about 15 minutes from Punta del Este. Cantegril and Club de Golf del Uruguay are private, so phone ahead, and Carmelo arranges rounds by phone, with green fees on request.
