About North Berwick Golf Club

North Berwick Golf Club plays over the West Links, an 18-hole, par 71 links on the Firth of Forth in East Lothian. Golf was being played on this ground as early as the 17th century, and the club is regarded as the 13th oldest in the world. Stone walls cut across several holes. The course is also home to the Redan, a par 3 that other courses have copied.

  • The 15th is the Redan, a par 3 copied on courses around the world.
  • Players must hit over stone walls to reach the greens at the 3rd and 13th holes.
  • The green at the 16th is split in two by a gully about four feet deep.
  • The links has been used for Final Qualifying for The Open when the championship is played at Muirfield.

History of North Berwick Golf Club

The club was formed in 1832 over a short course of six holes. It reached 18 holes by 1877, when it measured 4,841 yards. A further extension in 1895 stretched the course to 6,095 yards. Ben Sayers supervised the last major alterations in 1932, and those changes gave the West Links the configuration golfers play today.

Signature holes at North Berwick Golf Club

The 13th is known as the Pit, the 14th as Perfection and the 16th as the Gate. The 14th earned its name because it takes two perfect shots to hit the green. At the 15th Redan the green slants from front right to back left, away from the player.
