About Formby Golf Club
Formby Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 course at Freshfield, on the Merseyside coast. It blends links and heathland, with holes running through sand dunes and tall pines. The pines have been planted since 1887, and there is one beside every flag. The course sits within a nature reserve, and red squirrels live among the trees.
- The Amateur Championship has been played at Formby four times, in 1957, 1967, 1984 and 2009.
- The club hosted the 2004 Curtis Cup, won by the United States, and has also served as an Open Championship qualifying venue.
- The clubhouse burned down in 1899 and was rebuilt in 1901; its clock was a gift from White Star Line chairman Bruce Ismay.
- Formby Ladies Golf Club is a separate club with its own 18-hole course beside the main course.
